Cyclones Show Growth in UCSC Slugfest Tournament

This past weekend UC Santa Cruz hosted Mills College and Arcadia University in the annual Santa Cruz Slugfest tournament. The Cyclones played a tough schedule facing Santa Cruz once and Arcadia twice.

While the Cyclones went 0-3 on the weekend, head coach Jack Cowden remains optimistic. “Mills continues to grow and develop as a competitive team and [I] expect a few surprises in the win column before the season is over.”

Led by Myeisha Williams and Alicia Zimmerman, the Cyclones were able to put significant points on the board. Williams had 14 kills for the weekend. Zimmerman added 8 kills, 1 assisted block and 23 digs. Setter, Stephanie Morales, added 10 digs of her own in the game against UCSC, and Kaya Dia had 28 digs for the weekend.

“Williams and Ziolkowski are proving to be an effective blocking duo in the front row,” commented coach Cowden. Williams’ had 7 assisted blocks combined with Jamie Ziolkowski’s 6 assisted blocks

As the Cyclones prepare for their seasonal road trip to Southern California in two weeks where they will play five contest over a long weekend, coach Cowden said, “This journey will test the stamina of the team and help prepare ourselves for the potential conference Championships in Delhi, New York.”

The Cyclones are on the road for their next contest on October 5th against West Coast Baptist. Mills is 1-0 against WCB and the match-up should be a good start to their long weekend.
