After 8 matches to finish up their preseason, Mills Volleyball is now comfortable with the addition of the 5 new, first years. The veteran players led the team this weekend as Mills held the annual Round Robin tournament, hosting Simpson University, Pacific Union, West Coast Baptist and New Hope.
Myeisha Williams, senior middle blocker, contributed several stellar contests with 8 kills and 3 solo blocks for the win against West Coast Baptist plus, 10 kills, 7 solo blocks and 3 block assists against Simpson. Sophomore, Addy Herrera-Orozco contributed successfully in the front row with 4 kills and no errors in the New Hope match and continues to be a stable influence on the team.
Senior Jamie Ziolkowski has stepped up the defense with 10 digs in both the WCB and Simpson matches as well as developing a very productive and reliable serving game. Taylor De Luna elevated her defense and serving game during this tournament and is becoming an influential specialist on the team.
Following in the veterans' footsteps, the first years brought an incredible amount of defensive play this past weekend. Amanda Aurelio had 17 digs against New Hope and Lici Zimmermann had 17 digs versus WCB and 12 digs versus Simpson. Zimmermann is finding her way offensively and produced 6 kills in a tough fought 5 setter against tournament winner Simpson. Erica Ordaz is finding her way both in the front and back row. Nina Tompkins is a definite spark to the team and Mills will be looking for reliable play in the near future. Stephanie Morales stepped seamlessly into the setter role and is the glue to court management.
Head coach Jack Cowden and new assistant coach Mike Knight are looking for this cohesive group to produce some surprising results this season. The Cyclones next match is on September 16, 2018 versus Westcliff Baptist.
