Cowden brings over 25 years of coaching experience to Mills. A former NCAA student-athlete, he has coached multiple sports at all levels and ages. For the past 15 years Cowden has focused his athletic associations primarily with women’s volleyball. Prior to his three seasons with Dominican, he was the first assistant at Foothill College, helping the team to the conference championship from 2009-2011. He coached for four years in the regional girl’s High Performance program, helping many athletes reach their goal of playing at the collegiate level. In 2012, Cowden assisted in the start-up of the national women’s professional volleyball league (PVL) through USA Volleyball and the NCVA, culminating in a final four finish at the National Championships in 2013.
Cowden has attended trainings at the Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, obtaining multiple coaching certifications through USA Volleyball. He is CAP III certified and also holds an Impact Instructor certification. He brings a great understanding of the “trinity of coach” (the balance of mind, body, and spirit). He has a great ability to incorporate sports with life skill lessons. His long term experience with competitive and recreational volleyball serves as an invaluable asset to his coaching philosophy.
