Cross Country Finishes Out a Great Season

Head coach Ivory Veale attributes his team's successful season to the athletes' chemistry. "The pre-season day trip to Lake Lagunitas was an excellent bonding opportunity for the team… [it] contributed greatly to the growth of our team identity, which was in turn was the catalyst for the results we achieved," said Veale. The team placed 4th in the ACAA Championships with each runner accomplishing a season and/or lifetime PR this year.

"Having coach Harlee on board for her second year as the assistant cross country coach… provided the continuity in the progression of training that I wanted. Most importantly, she supported the overall goal of allowing the athletes to self-actualize an athletic identity and believe we could be a competitive team," added Veale.

While the team is losing 2 seniors, Veale is confident in his returners to continue to lead the team as they did this year. "I am confident that Laura Schultz will assume that role as she has a plan to be the individual champion at the ACAA Championships as well as break the Mills College 5k and 6k school records," Veale explained.

With Schultz leading the team, Veale plans on winning the ACAA Championships next year and continues to actively recruit. His recruiting has focused on finding athletes who have prior experience in a competitive running atmosphere because the season starts so quickly, novice runners struggle racing at that high of a level. Veale would like to find out how to improve this hard transition because having a balanced team of novice runners and experienced runners would be beneficial to the team and its future.
