Entering the game on Friday, multiple goal-scorers were sidelined for the Cyclones due to various head and ankle injuries. Simpson University (1-10) proved to be a tough match-up for the Cyclones (3-9).
Shots on goal were traded by both teams, but the score remained 0-0 until the last minutes of the second half. Senior Dalia Pimentel shot from the top of the box to put away the lone goal of the match.
“Pimentel battled 90 minutes. Winning balls out of the air and creating opportunities to start the attack,” said head coach Lilia Dosalmas. This was Pimentel’s third goal of the season and she has been crucial in the midfield for the Cyclones all season long.
On top of the multiple attacks led by Pimentel, first year goalie Melissa Ibarra made several great saves. This was Ibarra’s first shutout of the season since she has been injured for most of the semester.
Dosalmas praised Ibarra’s game, saying, “[She] stepped in and was confident and strong in her play. She played 90 minutes and was able to be aggressive and physical and made the final save of the game off of a 1v1 breakaway keeping her team to a 1-0 victory in the last minute of the match.” Due to Ibarra’s great game and shutout, she was awarded the ACAA Conference Player of the Week.
The Cyclones will be heading to William Jessup University in Rocklin, CA on October 24th to play the Warriors.
